We contacted Marina about Gus - a 4 year old Jack Russell we’d adopted from a Brussels refuge. He was a stressed out little dog with a forceful character and we were beginning to think we’d taken on more than we could handle.

The main issues were separation anxiety and extreme reactions to anything he perceived as a threat. Leaving him alone in the house or even a different room for five minutes meant we would return to a hysterical Gus, puddles everywhere and worse. But taking him out with us was joyless all round as he’d hurl himself barking and snarling at every other dog, bicycle, jogger etc that we encountered. He was convinced he ruled the roost and had taken to mounting the legs of any guests who entered the house, and nipping them if they rejected his advances.

Contacting Marina was the best thing we could have done. Even before the consultation, she responded with some brilliantly helpful and practical advice.

The consultation was a revelation. Marina fitted us in really quickly and we spent a full afternoon together. We were already familiar with the concepts of Amichien Bonding (AB) through Jan Fennel’s books and DVD. But Marina really brought it to life for us and clarified the points we were struggling with.

Marina observed our and Gus’ behaviour and gave us insights into what we needed to be doing differently. At the end of the session we set clear objectives (eg getting Gus’ recall up to 100%, getting Gus to accept separation through gesture leaving ) and talked through the steps to achieve these.

Since then we have been in touch many times over email and phone. Marina is always supportive and her advice is spot on.

For the last few weeks we’ve been following AB religiously! The change in Gus has been extraordinary. Inside the house he’s truly happy and relaxed and it’s fascinating to see how well he responds to new people he meets who follow the AB rules. We have left him for periods of up to 4 hours with no damage and a happy dog when we return, who’s just excited to see us.

It’s taking longer to deal with Gus’ issues outside the den but we’re already seeing improvements in the way that he behaves around other dogs and bicycles. We recently took him on holiday with us for a week. We wouldn’t even have contemplated that with the ‘old’ Gus.

Amichien Bonding is a long term solution and for us it’s involved hard work and some surprising shifts in thinking. But it soon becomes second nature and it really works.

Marina’s expertise and encouragement has made all the difference. We are so glad we got in touch and immensely grateful for all the advice and support - a huge thank you from all of us!
